I was bright & intelligent, but not studious; and the aspiration of alternate career landed me in hospitality. Initially, it was the excitement of doing something different – cooking, beverages, languages, etc. but later I developed a serious liking for this emotionally satisfying and a people centric business. A successful hotelier must be passionate to the extent of just short of being eccentric. It is a demanding profession, where your passion drives the results. The early success drove me harder and my urge to better myself and improve, innovate & be impactful stretches my limits of passion 2. With your extensive experience across various renowned hotel chains, what key lessons have you learned that you believe differentiate exceptional hotel management from merely adequate management? Humility and humanity in our leadership styles make us different. We are as good as our team, and I very strongly believe that the virtues mentioned above hold true for handling all stakeholders – be it guests, team members, owners, or corporate officers. Leading by example and demonstrating it in front of your team will increase their will to perform and drive towards excellence both qualitatively and financially 3. As someone deeply involved in Food and Beverages, could you share a particular dining experience or innovation that you have spearheaded, which significantly enhanced guest satisfaction and loyalty? There is always something happening at The Den. Surprising things, interesting things, enjoyable things – but you will always find something to stimulate you. Food & Beverage is all about touching the hearts of your guests. One of the major challenges of any F&B operation is to give the first course to the guests in no time – and most of us falter here. At Layla, as soon as the guest enters, the waiter post greeting and seating , will bring the selection of Cold Mezze to visually pick and choose with hot Pita’s and then the Menu is given to the guest. Being authentic, innovative, and original has always made us darling of our guests – be it Kanafe or a Filo Feta; Goat Milk Panacota or Shrimp Falafel; our small but crazy repertoire is our mantra to guest satisfaction 4. Lead by Example, Attention to Detail, Innovative leadership, and Entrepreneurial Approach are quintessential for success in hospitality. Staff look to leaders for cues on how to behave and I model company values and behaviours that I want to see in the team. Leading by example include things like listening to the team, helping, delivering on promises, and being inclusive. Hospitality is a very dynamic and ever-changing world as we are dealing with Human Emotions at every stage. I would take a leap of faith with technology – especially AI and XI changing our very philosophy of hospitality. However, the differentiator will always be the Human touch. Joining Indus Hospitality and taking on Yazu as a brand was a fortunate decision for me, timed perfectly. As a Brand Chef with extensive Pan Asian experience, aligning with a brand sharing the same direction and vision as my own was crucial in making this choice. Establishing a connection and synergy with one's superiors, particularly those who possess a shared understanding of flavors and vision, is paramount for any chef. In this regard, I consider myself fortunate to have Mr. Ranbir Nagpal, the CEO of the company, who not only brought me on board but also entrusted me with unwavering support. Drawing from my fifteen years of experience working in India, I've been able to grasp the nuances of local preferences and palate, which has proven invaluable in my role. 2. Yazu prides itself on blending tradition with modernity in its dishes. Can you share an example of a dish where you've successfully achieved this balance? Yazu boasts a diverse array of dishes worthy of highlighting. Our Sushi and Dimsum offerings consistently garner praise and recognition, setting a high standard for excellence. Additionally, our signature dishes, including the esteemed Black Cod Miso, delectable Avocado Tartare, and tantalizing Japanese Carpaccio, stand out as exquisite culinary creations. As a chef, you've emphasized the importance of incorporating locally beloved ingredients into your dishes. How do you strike a balance between honouring tradition and embracing new culinary challenges? Selecting the right ingredients is an ongoing challenge for every chef, especially when introducing a cuisine that is not native to the region. We prioritize sourcing essential elements such as main basic sauces, seafood, meats, and certain fruits and vegetables from Japan/Thailand or other countries integral to the cuisine's authenticity. Meanwhile, we meticulously select other ingredients from local vendors. Our aim is to strike a balance, striving to achieve flavors that are as close to tradition and as authentic as possible. 4. You've worked in various kitchens across different countries. Could you share a particularly memorable experience or mentor who influenced your culinary career? My journey has been a bit rocky. For a long time, I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep working in this industry. Between 2000 and 2008, I didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted to do, so I ended up wasting eight years. During that time, I was just going through life without any real passion or direction. Because of this, I don't have many experiences that particularly standout, since most of my learning was on my own. But there's one memory that really sticks out to me: watching "Iron Chef Japan" on TV and being really impressed by Chef Masaharu Morimoto. That moment got me excited and made me think about whether I wanted to be a chef for the rest of my life. And now, I'm fully committed to my work, knowing without a doubt that this is where I belong. 5. With the rise of Asian pop culture influencing various aspects of society, including food, how do you see Yazu staying relevant and innovative in this dynamic landscape? At Yazu, we prioritize maintaining consistency in both food quality and service, recognizing the fierce competition in our industry. However, we also understand the importance of adapting to a dynamic landscape at a measured pace. We believe in avoiding frequent changes to our menu to prevent confusion among our guests, many of whom are regular patrons drawn to Yazu for its familiar offerings. Rest assured, as long as I serve as Brand Chef at Yazu, I am committed to utilizing all my capabilities to enhance the Yazu experience for our guests. 6. Collaboration and teamwork are crucial in a restaurant setting. How do you foster a positive and collaborative environment among your staff at Yazu? In today's world, the younger generation is notably different. There's a lack of stability and patience, which presents significant challenges. Many individuals are seeking attention constantly. However, in my approach, I strive to maintain regular communication with my team, finding a balance between being too close and too distant. While fostering close relationships isn't my primary focus, I prioritize maintaining professionalism to establish boundaries and promote understanding. This approach allows for a mix of seriousness and casualness in interactions. Simultaneously, I keep my team engaged by consistently providing opportunities for learning and growth. Recognizing and appreciating their efforts within the team ensures that everyone feels valued and motivated. Moreover, it's crucial to create an environment where team members feel protected and supported. By sharing my experiences with them, I aim to better understand their perspectives and connect with them on a deeper level. Another fundamental aspect of my approach is to help develop the personalities of my team members, enabling them to clarify their visions for the future. Outside of the kitchen, do you have any hobbies or interests that inspire or influence your cooking style? Cooking is an art as we all know. There are certain things that inspire & motivate me to curate my food the way I do. I absolutely love music. I play the piano & guitar in my spare time and my preferred genre of music is more calm, jazz, soft pop etc. basically anything that's extremely soulful & peaceful. I think it's a part of my personality as well. Listening to such music makes me feel at home. I think that's the reason that all my recipes/creations are extremely simple & traditional and not gimmicky. My style of cooking is certainly established from my personal interests outside of work. What are your key responsibilities as the General Manager of The Pride Hotel Chennai, and how do you prioritize them? The responsibilities, per se, are very varied. I would say, as a GM, and in today's age and condition, the first thing that I would look at is colleague well-being and colleague upliftment. I think if I take care of my colleagues, the colleagues will take care of my guests. And of course, that brings our second priority, and that is guest satisfaction and guest well-being. Of course, when I say guest satisfaction, it is guest smiles, which are what get captured for us both in the form of online comments, interactions that we have with guests, and of course, that is what leads to the third one, and that is revenue management, which is where our salaries do come from. When we are talking about revenues, we look at revenue maximization; we also look at how do we upsell ourselves into various other avenues available in the hotel. We also have the priority of ensuring that the management and the stakeholders are happy with us, both in terms of reputation in the city and in India and abroad, and also as far as the monetary gains are concerned. Carbon footprints are something which are our responsibility towards the environment. We look at the environment in a big way as far as the Pride Hotel Group is concerned. We are associated with a lot of organizations that are doing good for society. We want to give back to society as the Pride Group of Hotels. Also, one of our key responsible areas is incorporation of technological advancements that have happened in the country and abroad, which brings us to what we monitor very closely, and they are our KRIs and KPIs. Can you share your experience in managing operations of your hotel? Operations are very varied. It's challenging and rewarding, obviously. The first thing that comes to mind is colleague improvement. There are a lot of training programs in place to ensure that colleagues are trained and become better to perform in their roles and upskill themselves into the next role. Guest satisfaction obviously becomes an important aspect for each one of us, hoteliers. Revenue maximization is the third part of my operations that I would definitely like to look at. Incorporation of technologies that have come into existence both in India and abroad is an integral part of our operations that we would like to bring into our gamut of operations. Food and beverage operations are something which is very intrinsic for us. Operations, like I said, has always been challenging, but more important is the health and safety aspect, more so with COVID that has come into play. There is a lot that has been done towards safety and security enhancement, including hygiene enhancement for both the colleagues and for the guests. Marketing is another area that takes a lot of time. Though we call it operations, Pride Group of Hotels has introduced something called brown bag sessions where colleagues from the hotel go across to the offices, and we take time to interact with each one of them. People who are from HR, in their organization interact with our HR manager. Our sales coordinators, we take them across to the companies where the interaction happens. There is a lot that happens on the interaction front between the hotel colleagues and colleagues who are at the workplace of the guests. Overall, it involves strong leadership. It takes you to look at the attention to detail and ability to juggle between the various facets of the hotel industry. And it is really wonderful. Each day gives you a lot of satisfaction as you close it. What steps would you take to enhance the guest experience at The Pride Hotel Chennai? I think the first thing that we need to do is to keep our ears to the ground, to listen to what the guest wants rather than just trying to give what we want to give to the guest. Many times, all that the guest needs is comfortable accommodation, a clean bathroom, a good night's rest, an excellent breakfast in the morning, and off they go to work. They are not looking at the frills that we tend to offer to the guests, so keeping our ears to the ground is very important. Guest experience can always be good if we are delivering what the guest wants. The only way we will come to know of it is through continuous interaction with the guest through feedback, surveys that come across online and offline. And talking to our colleagues. I think instead of the hotel management talking to the guest, the colleagues who talk to the guest while cleaning the room or serving the food in the room or across on the table in the restaurants, they have a lot of insights. The more we talk to our colleagues, the more we learn about our guests. Value adds, yes. We could always give local attractions, local sightseeing options, but as far as enhancing guest experience in the hotel is concerned, keeping our ears to the ground and talking to guests I think takes the cake. Can you highlight a recent trend or technological advancement you believe is crucial for the hospitality industry? With the introduction of a lot of technology, the first thing hoteliers have come to learn post-COVID-19 is to be contactless, without losing on personalization, of course. So, contactless technology is what we should focus on as far as hotels are concerned. Many hotels and hotel chains are adopting it today; for example, mobile phones and mobile check-ins are in vogue. Mobiles have turned into keys, where you don't have to actually take a physical key to the rooms, whether it's in the form of RFID, swipe card, or manual keys. All the check-in formalities are being completed by the guest online even before they arrive. At the Pride Group of Hotels, we have introduced something called self-check-in. So, the guest can fill up all the required details online and send them. They don't have to sign on the registration card at all because there is a digital registration card that they already sign. We take all the information from that into our POS system. The moment they arrive, they just have to announce themselves, and the key is ready for them and handed over. There are many areas where we have introduced a seamless flow of information from one to the other. I think contactless technology, without compromising on personalization or cost, is the trend for hoteliers in the coming times. How do you foster a positive work culture and promote professional growth among your team members? Again, a very important aspect as far as today's work culture is concerned. I think the first thing we need to look at is transparency. You need to be as transparent as possible with each one of your colleagues to help them understand what is happening as far as the hotel, the chain, and the industry are concerned. That makes one feel more comfortable in the workplace. Open communication is also very important and can take various forms. "Walk the talk" is another crucial aspect where we are on the shop floor and delivering what we talk about. For example, we go across to places like the laundry, kitchens, wedding venues, and housekeeping to interact with our colleagues there. Through this, we come to know about the actual requirements of our employees or colleagues who work alongside us. Training and development are crucial and foster a positive work environment. In our hotel, we have initiated something called book reading and review. This ensures that individuals read a particular book and present their understanding to a group of colleagues, followed by a discussion. Management review sessions have also been introduced where individuals stand in front of their colleagues and speak. Communication skills are very important in the hotel industry, and these activities help in enhancing them. There are also numerous team-building activities that foster a happy working environment. At our hotel, we conduct town halls which include quizzes and the distribution of small gifts. We celebrate all festivals, and recently we celebrated the Pongal festival by the poolside for all the staff, and they had a great time. We also organize fun and game activities known as "Fun Fridays," dedicated to relaxation and enjoyment. Work-life balance is crucial, and today's colleagues are demanding it. We need to listen to them as maintaining a work-life balance is essential for productivity at work. If you could introduce one unconventional service or amenity at The Pride Hotel Chennai, what would it be and why? One activity that we could offer as a differentiated experience at this hotel is the Digital Detox package. We could introduce a program where guests stay away from laptops, TVs, or cellphones for a short duration, perhaps half an hour or 45 minutes. Our hotel's location is advantageous, with nearby attractions such as the Eco Park, a 5-minute drive away, and Nehru Park, just a 4-minute walk from the hotel. We encourage our colleagues to accompany guests to these places, making it easier for guests to explore. This provides an opportunity for conversation, fostering a human touch and meaningful interactions. The Digital Detox package is something we would like to introduce to enhance the guest experience. Additionally, Chennai is a culturally rich city in Tamil Nadu, known for its artisans and traditional arts. We are already bringing artisans to the Pride Hotel Chennai, where they can interact with guests for about half an hour in the evening, ideally between 7:30 and 8 p.m. We inform our guests about these artisans and offer them the chance to engage with artists, singers, and classical dancers who can perform for about half an hour or 45 minutes. This allows guests to immerse themselves in the cultural diversity of Tamil Nadu and Chennai. In a diverse and dynamic city like Chennai, how do you tailor the hotel's offerings and services to meet the needs of a broad range of guests? The first thing we need to determine is the purpose of the guest's visit. Are they here for leisure, work, a break from routine, event-related travel, or just passing through? Understanding the guest's needs is crucial. We tailor packages accordingly and engage with guests during check-in or throughout their stay. For example, we've had long-stay guests unsure of what to do on weekends. We've organized activities like walks in the nearby park or cooking sessions in our kitchen to cater to their needs. Recently, when guests were unaware of a flower show in Chennai, we took the initiative to inform them and arranged transportation, even though they were willing to cover the costs. We strive to meet guests' needs proactively. For instance, some guests may need to leave as early as 4 a.m. without knowing where to have breakfast. I always believe that Together Everyone Achieves More and that's what is Team for. As a team leader, i have set target deadlines for specific task for better finance management. We keep communications very clear amongst us and work in harmony. We organise many Extracurricular Hospitality Competitions in various fields such as Floral decorations, Tray Landscaping, Rangoli Competitions for floral, stone or powder rangoli to bring out their talent and in interest into field of creativity in housekeeping. Language and Cultural Programs, Leadership Roles in Student Organizations, Culinary Events and Tastings, Technology and Innovation Initiatives, Entrepreneurial Endeavours, and Participation in Conferences and Seminars are major activities to enhance their holistic development. Meet Ritu Chawla, a hospitality professional whose journey began with a passion for design, nurtured by visionary parents in India's emerging hospitality scene. Trained at the Institute of Hotel Management, Aurangabad, affiliated with Taj, Ritu quickly rose through the ranks at Taj Mahal Palace & Towers, Mumbai, becoming one of Taj's youngest General Managers at Fisherman’s Cove, Chennai. With over 15 years in luxury hotels, she transitioned to international brands like Marriott before founding Prognosis Global Consulting, offering expertise in planning, construction, and operations. What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry, and how has your journey unfolded over the years? It all started ‘by-design’! I’m a second generation hotelier! Both my parents were veterans in the industry, when the hospitality landscape was still nascent in India. Having lived as a child in hotels, I would eat, sleep and breathe hotels; and thus it was the most obvious career choice for me. Inspite of the perceived inherent challenges of the industry, I was only encouraged by my parents and there was no looking back! I was the first batch of the coveted Institute of Hotel Management, Aurangabad (run by Taj), which provided me a respectable education and an imposing launch pad as a Management Trainee with the Taj Group of Hotels at the iconic Taj Mahal Palace & Towers, Mumbai. There started my career as a hard core operations professional. I took the Accommodations route, played head of department early on in my career as I moved every two to three years into new roles at various hotels; to become one of the youngest General Manager in the Group (within 10 years of graduating) at the Taj Fisherman’s Cove in Chennai. With over 15+ years of exposure in Luxury Hotels and Resorts with the Taj Group, I decided it was time for a change and to explore the world of International brands and joined the Marriott as a pre-opening General Manager in Pune. It was post almost two decades, of a fulfilling Hotel Operations career that I decided to explore the world of Consulting and set off on my entrepreneurial journey. Today, as the Managing Partner at Prognosis Global Consulting - a boutique turn-key hospitality consulting firm, from running hotels, I now advise Ownership on planning, building them and advising on operations! Through this 25+ years journey in Hospitality I feel I have had a coveted 360 view to the spectrum of skills, roles, hotels that the hotel industry has to offer, and the journey has been extremely enjoyable and satisfying to say the least. How does your hotel operations and management background inform your work at Prognosis Global Consulting, specifically in offering consulting, asset management, and advisory services to hospitality industry clients? As a complex, capital-intensive business, hospitality asset classes have always required thorough domain expertise of industry professionals and specialists. India and South Asia has been an incredibly exciting and immensely attractive markets, but it is also a challenging environment in which you do business. Thus, the role of a consultant is multifaceted, as it often requires educating the investors on the ‘nature of the beast’ i.e. Hotels, which usually comes with extensive experience. While it is important to have all the theoretical business knowledge needed to expertly advise any hospitality business – things like finance, marketing, consumer insights, business management etc., it is equally imperative to have the real-world practical know-how in hotel operations to be able to put the theory into practice. It is here we step in as invaluable partners, especially in a dynamic and competitive landscape of the hospitality industry, guiding individual owners / establishments towards strategic decision-making, running optimal efficient hotel operations, advising on best practices and unparalleled guest experiences. As a team, in our combined wisdom, we have worked on 300+ Feasibility Studies, for many of the hotels that you see running in India, today. Our one single aim is to assist hotel owners to develop assets that are efficiently built and are a business proposition, giving the anticipated return on investments (and not pure-play ego assets). Some of our success stories involve hand-holding clients right from the stage of a Feasibility Study, through Management Contract negotiations with Hotel brands, pre-project activities of getting the right set of consultants on board, coordinating with all stakeholders during the building stage of the hotel and finally, as owner representatives, contributing along with the hotel brand team to deliver the desired positioning, product and experiences on the launch of the hotel asset. As one of the youngest General Managers in the Taj Group of Hotels, what were some of the challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them? In the initial years, as a young leader, one of the daunting challenges you can face is to be just taken seriously at work, garner the respect and faith of a diverse team of people – people of all age groups, experiences, backgrounds, education levels, temperaments, motivations etc to come around your shared vision and goal to excel. Woman empowerment lies in honouring and respecting yourself. When you respect yourself, others see it and will respect you too. As Eleanor Roosevelt (Former First Lady of USA), once said, “No one can put you down without your permission.” I think my approach was simple. I embraced my inherent leadership qualities as a woman. My agenda was to grow myself, while helping others grow along the way. I knew what it’s like to be the underdog and work hard not to disappoint oneself and others. Looking for respect through inclusivity, fair and transparent dealings, teamwork more than mere recognition; I was not seeking to become the star of the show -- but an enabler for others to create a great show! In other words, being in the spotlight was not what drove me – but rather it’s the ability to influence positive outcomes with maximum impact together with my team, that held me in good stead. In your opinion, what are some key factors that have contributed to your success in the hospitality industry, particularly as a woman in a leadership role? With my first employer, I moved every 2-3 years to new geographies, new hotels and new roles. In my younger years I grabbed the opportunity to explore these new assignments to just experience the adrenaline rush of meeting new people – guests and colleagues, alike. I was extremely lucky and blessed (humbled and grateful to my mentors) to get my first executive position, as an acting HOD (FOM) in the ripe age of 26 years, leading a team of 30; At 32 years of age, I was one of the youngest GM of my times at the Taj Fisherman’s Cove, Chennai; an assignment viewed as very challenging by many, owing to its aggressive labour union. I was also selected for the first batch of a sponsored Executive MBA at the SP Jain Institute, Mumbai while working almost 14-16 hours a day as the EAM of a Luxury city-hotel; leaving me to burn the midnight oil while working a demanding full-time job, sacrifice a lot of my personal life to upskill myself and complete the program, at any cost. The point I’m trying to make is that there were many firsts and I volunteered for them all! At every turn I embraced the opportunities that came my way – I raised my hands and let people know I was up for a challenge! As a woman, I embraced my natural leadership style, bringing these intrinsic strengths to the teams and businesses. We are more collaborative, inclusive, encourage participation, happy to share power and information, emphasize on teamwork, creative problem solving, leading by example, sharing appreciation and credit, fair and transparent in dealings. In my world, my integrity is more important than my likability. Once all is said and done, people will respect those who acted on what they believe in, than believed what others want them to act on. I did not rely on favours; I truly believed I can influence my own advancement by serving others, and earn respect. As a consummate team player, I sought to prove my value and self-worth by exceeding performance expectations. How do you approach leadership and team management in your role, and what strategies do you employ to motivate and empower your team members? LEAD BY EXAMPLE: Go down the trenches and dirty your hands. Know how to take a check-in, make the bed, drop bags to the rooms when required, or serve a Cappuccino at the Restaurant! You build teams, when they see you at the epi-centre of the action with them. When the team does well you do well. You take a collective responsibility. COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE: In my world, there is nothing like too much communication. It’s important to share with the team all updates, appreciation, critical feedback and failures from time to time. As we communicate effectively, as leaders, I believe we are admired, trusted, and followed. BE GENUINE, FAIR & TRANSPARENT: “Try not to become a person of success, but rather try to become a person of value.” - Albert Einstein. This has always been my mantra. Share the story with your team in as much detail as possible and carry your team along. It’s never about a personal gain but a collective win. RESPECT & DIGNITY FOR ALL: As Maya Angelou rightly said, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” This is true for customers, but more so for our employees. Treat people with respect and believe that they are intelligent to manage difficult goals. A team that feels empowered commits itself to the larger goals. CELEBRATE THE SMALL ACHIEVEMENTS & WINS: As people we must learn to appreciate people, not things I’ve always been surrounded by leaders who “worked hard, but played harder.” We would celebrate the smallest wins – a samosa party in office, or a team lunch, or post-event team bash. It helps diffuse the stress and tension. Gender equality and diversity are important topics in today's workplace. How do you believe we can foster a more inclusive environment in the hospitality industry? While we women have all that it takes to make good leaders in the Hospitality and related Services industries, from the time I joined the industry, and quarter of a century later, we continue to be under represented, especially at senior levels. There is enough research to support, that having women leaders in our teams, yields unparalleled opportunities and competitive advantages. And as smart leaders of tomorrow, to have winning gender-balanced teams – we must be aware of these advantages and support it! I strongly believe, it is time to shift the discussion away from a lingering women’s problem or an issue of equality or glass-ceilings, and instead focus on this as a massive business opportunity. Diversity must not just remain a feminine agenda but become a business agenda! Individually, we're one drop but together we're an ocean. Until then, as women, we must commit to a "gender parity mindset" via progressive action. Exciting changes are being seen in the Hospitality industry, especially post Covid-19. One of the trends that I would specifically like to highlight is as follows: The traveler of the future yearns for ‘access over acquisition’, and this will mean ‘experiences over consumption’ that will be a key driver of future demand. Customers are becoming more and more demanding for personalized, exclusive and emotionally transformational experiences. Hotels brands will need to continue to invest in building and delivering on these emotive needs to ensure patronage from the evolved future traveler. Experiential and authentic travel will be the buzzwords for the future. Globally there is a major shift towards exploration of newer experiences and discovery of new destinations in niche markets. Hotels will have to re-imagine, re-invent and re-define constantly to satiate the need of ‘experience one-upmanship’! Hotels will have to effectively pivot to capitalize and deliver on the travelers' primary desire to make deep, local connections. Needs such as ‘curated’, ‘artisanal’, and ‘authentic’ will dominate future travel itineraries and brands will have to fulfil the highly emotional customer need for ‘minimalism & simplicity’. True luxury will be in slowing down. Increasingly, less will mean more for the discerning traveler. It is certain that going forward, rapid innovations in technology, entertainment and energy sciences will completely transform hotel experiences of travelers. In my opinion, in many ways, automation will allow hotels to return to their roots as a people-first industry. Instead of performing rote behind-the-scenes tasks, staff can work frontline to maximize their impact on the customer experience, driving up quality and consistency. Successful hotels will be where highly trained staff will offer guests unique custom-made experiences i.e. offer guests personalized services based on their desires, moods and energy levels, inviting guests to eat in whichever location at whatever time they feel hungry and tailoring extraordinary experiences and adventures like never done before. As we face the VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) world and are in the times of chaos, volatility and ambiguity, as leaders we need to be constantly in touch with evolving trends, help outline more agile strategies to meet these novel needs, develop new business models, offer creative problem solving and understand our intensifying competition and stakeholder expectations, alike. As we celebrate Women's Day, what message or advice would you like to share with young women who aspire to pursue careers in leadership roles, especially in male-dominated industries like hospitality? In the 21st Century there is a combination of new generation of employees, new technologies, new business realities and such a wave calls for a new style of leadership, one that replaces control and command with more transparency and inclusion, collaborative team-work, higher emotional intelligence in dealings. This increasingly highlights the value of a feminine style of approach to leadership. Any leader can do that, but we women leaders can do it more naturally!! Message No 1 - Be confident and enthusiastically embrace your leadership style and what you bring onto the table. As a leader, to succeed in this industry you must be passionate to a fault and ‘give it your ALL’!! Work hard, take initiatives, be fearless, not just lean forward – plunge in, embrace the opportunities that come your way, raise your hands, be flexible and mobile and let people know you are up for challenging roles! Be strong-willed and purpose-driven. In our industry we need to be ‘jack of all trades and master of none’. Unlike what the version of this saying would have us believe, having multiple interests and cross-functional skills (S&M, F&B, Rooms etc) actually can prove advantageous in our business. Ila Prabhu's journey in hospitality began in 2007 as a management trainee in housekeeping, despite lacking prior experience or education in the field. An army wife, she seized an opportunity with 'Welcome Jawan' by ITC in 2006-07, transitioning from her role as a lecturer. After rigorous training, she became an assistant manager in housekeeping at ITC Kakatiya in 2017. Supported by invaluable guidance from seniors, Ila progressed through various luxury hotels within the ITC group, contributing significantly during pre-opening phases. Her curiosity led her to explore different hotel departments, earning recognition for her versatility. Despite starting from a non-hotelier background, she advanced to her current role as a general manager, grateful for the opportunities that have shaped her hospitality career. Could you share with us your journey in the hospitality industry and how it has led you to your current position as General Manager? My journey in hospitality has been full of new experiences. Every day brings something new, something different. I began my journey in 2007 as a management trainee in housekeeping. Interestingly, I had no prior experience or education in hospitality when I entered the field. I was a lecturer, teaching BCom students, but being an army wife, I had to relocate every two years with my husband. With the responsibility of being a mother, I decided to focus on raising my children while they were young. However, in 2006/2007, I came across a special opportunity for army officers called 'Welcome Jawan' by ITC, and I decided to apply. My children had grown to a stage where they could manage on their own, and I felt it was the right time to invest in my career. The application process involved multiple stages of interviews, including one with Mr. Kuldeep Bharati, the GM at ITC Kakatiya. Despite the extensive interview process, I was fortunate to be selected. Following my selection, I underwent a rigorous one-year training program with ITC to become a proficient housekeeper. The training was comprehensive, starting from the basics of room care and guest preparation. After completing my training, I was appointed as an assistant manager in housekeeping at ITC Kakatiya in 2017. Throughout my career, I received invaluable guidance and support from my seniors, which complemented my hard work. Their recognition of my efforts propelled me forward, leading to opportunities in various luxury collection hotels within the ITC group. I had the privilege of working at seven different hotels, including ITC Rajputana and ITC Grand Para, where I was involved in the pre-opening phase. As I transitioned into roles involving core operational management, my curiosity led me to explore other departments within the hotels. I sought to understand their functioning and operations, which eventually led to recognition from my seniors for my ability to perform beyond my designated area. With their guidance and support, I progressed to my current position as a general manager, starting from a non-hotelier background. Today, as I stand before you as a general manager, I am proud of my journey and grateful for the opportunities provided by the company I work for. As someone with extensive experience in hotel operations, what key lessons have you learned throughout your career contributed to your success in managing hotels effectively? Experience and learning, I believe, are relative terms. What may be exciting for me might not be as exciting for others. So, for me, every day is a learning experience. Over the last 16 years, I have learned a great deal and have become a better person. Hospitality is a field that fosters personal growth. It teaches you patience, multitasking, and the unpredictability of dealing with people you've never met before, including those who work for you. Every day presents different situations and interactions, all of which contribute to shaping you into a better human being. Flexibility, adaptability, and patience are qualities that I have cultivated during my 16-year career. I've learned to handle unforeseen circumstances and adjust accordingly. When I first entered the industry, I wasn't as patient or people-oriented as I am today, but these qualities have now become my strengths. Overall, I've learned that personalization is the key to success in the hospitality industry. Whether it's adaptability, empathy, or being people-oriented, personalization is at the core of it all. Representing a brand means building relationships with guests, and personalization is crucial in fostering those connections. This, I believe, is my greatest achievement and the most significant lesson I've learned in my 17-year career journey. Could you highlight some of the key responsibilities and challenges you've faced as a General Manager at ITC Hotels, and how you've navigated them to ensure operational excellence? As a general manager, my primary responsibility lies in ensuring operational efficiency, encompassing revenue generation, cost management, and people management. Operational excellence is the cornerstone of my career success. Challenges are inherent in any role, and how one navigates through them defines the excitement and fulfillment of the job. Effective communication, strategic planning, and decisive action are key elements in overcoming challenges and achieving career success. Reflecting on past challenges, the COVID-19 pandemic stands out as a significant test for the hospitality industry. The pandemic brought about various challenges, including manpower shortages, resource constraints, and uncertainties in operations. Maintaining team morale, ensuring guest safety, and delivering exceptional service with limited resources were paramount concerns during that time. Our focus shifted from revenue generation to ensuring the safety and well-being of our team members and guests. During the pandemic, we rallied together as a company to address these challenges head-on. Extensive research was conducted to implement sanitization protocols, provide appropriate protective equipment for staff, and enhance guest comfort and safety measures. Despite the setbacks faced by the hospitality industry, the pandemic served as a learning experience, prompting us to reassess our approach to employee care and guest service. Through collaborative efforts across all levels of the organization, we successfully navigated through the challenges and emerged stronger. In retrospect, the COVID-19 pandemic taught us valuable lessons and underscored the importance of teamwork and adaptability in overcoming adversity. Today, as we welcome guests with smiles on our faces, we recognize the resilience and unity that enabled us to overcome unprecedented challenges and emerge stronger than before. Transitioning from the role of Operations Manager to Resident Manager and now as General Manager, what adjustments have you had to make, and how do you approach each position differently? Transitioning from the role of Operations Manager to Resident Manager and eventually to a General Manager entails a progression of responsibilities, skill development, and mindset adjustments. Initially, as an Operations Manager, my focus was on overseeing day-to-day operations, managing staffing, inventory, and ensuring audit performance. However, as I advanced to the role of Resident Manager, my attention shifted towards guest satisfaction. I became more attuned to guest feedback, striving to enhance their experience and ensure their stay was memorable. Upon assuming the position of General Manager, my primary focus shifted towards operational excellence encompassing various aspects such as revenue management, customer satisfaction, and cost efficiency. This transition in focus was a structured evolution in my career, facilitated by the guidance of mentors, senior colleagues, and my own dedication to continuous improvement. Women's Day is approaching, and we'd love to hear your thoughts on the significance of this day. How do you believe we can continue celebrating and empowering women in the hospitality industry? It's an interesting thought, but why wait for a specific day to celebrate women? For me, every day is Women's Day. Women are the creators of this universe, and I believe they deserve respect and recognition every day, in every role they play. Whether it's as a mother, a teacher, or a wife, women excel and inspire in every aspect of family life. Moreover, they shine just as brightly in professions such as medicine, education, space exploration, and hospitality. In every role, women display remarkable talent and strength. Therefore, I advocate for celebrating and honoring women every single day. As a woman in a leadership role, what advice would you give to other women aspiring to pursue careers in hospitality or any male-dominated industry? I would say that while it may have been male-dominated in the past, I don't fully agree with the notion of male dominance in the hospitality industry. Nowadays, women are present in every field, including hospitality. In my experience, working with ITC, I've had many female colleagues, and I've never felt that it's a male-dominated field. I want to encourage all my female colleagues to consider hospitality as a welcoming profession. I joined at the age of 36 and have reached this position, which shows that there are ample opportunities for those passionate about their work. Organizations like ours provide support for women to succeed and settle into the industry. The days of considering it a male-dominated industry are behind us. It's time for women to recognize their inclusion and feel like an integral part of it. As long as we assert ourselves and see this industry as ours, it will no longer be seen as male-dominated. Women have a significant impact in every field today, and they have the power to make a difference, even turning it into a women-dominated industry. In your opinion, what are some strategies or initiatives that hotels and organisations can implement to promote gender diversity and inclusivity in the workplace? Gender diversity and inclusion are vital, and at ITC, we've made significant strides in this area. We've increased maternity leave and provided additional paid leave days for women to care for their babies before returning to work. Fathers are also granted leave to take care of their children, allowing women to focus on their careers knowing their families are supported. Our hotel facilities include a lovely crèche where mothers can bring their babies, ensuring everyone's happiness and well-being. These initiatives not only support women but also boost morale among all employees, demonstrating that our organization cares about their well-being. Previously, women may have hesitated to work in hospitality due to concerns about work-life balance. However, with these policies in place, women feel confident that they can balance their professional and family lives effectively. Flexible policies like work-from-home and paternal leave contribute significantly to their confidence and encourage women to build their careers with our company. Reflecting on your experiences, could you share a memorable moment or achievement in your career that you are particularly proud of? Every stepping stone to success is memorable, but I'd like to share a particularly interesting moment. We were attending a workshop in Delhi, and on the last day, we were supposed to receive our certificates. Our division chief executive unexpectedly joined us, which was a pleasant surprise. As he entered, he announced my name, catching me completely off guard. There were around 50 people in the hall, including prominent position holders. Suddenly, a trolley appeared with a beautifully decorated cake. Mr. Chadda, our divisional chief executive, took the stage and introduced me as the upcoming GM for WelcomHotel Chennai. I was overwhelmed with happiness to be recognized for my work in front of everyone. Then, he invited me to cut the cake. It was an incredibly memorable moment, one that I'll cherish forever. While success brings many memories, there are certain moments that fill you with immense pride. This was one such moment for me, where my achievements were celebrated openly. Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations for the future, both personally and professionally, and how do you plan to continue making a positive impact in the hospitality industry?
